Ranch on the River Brand Launch

One of the reasons I love my job so much is because of my wonderful clients – and this project is no exception. Wendy, a retired realtor and one the sweetest people I’ve ever come into contact with, reached out to me regarding a major overhaul of her existing brand and website.

The subject? A 15,000 acre, 20,000 home, mega real estate development in Santa Clarita Valley, CA called Newhall Ranch. In the works for decades, it’s finally entering the construction and development phase.

Wendy’s brand, called Ranch on the River, would act as an information hub for everything regarding the development, including acting as an intermediary between potential buyers and the builder. Since she’d be competing directly for traffic with the development company, her main concerns were SEO and a brand and website that were very easy (and beautiful) to navigate.

The inspiration

The inspiration for the brand was an earthy, country/ranch type of feel as a nod to Newhall Ranch’s origins and history mixed with some modern luxury. The result was a clean, refined and down-to-earth feel that would appeal to community and nature lovers alike.

The logo design

With our inspiration and color palette decided, we moved into logo designs. We wanted to keep that ranch-inspired feel in the logo as well, so leaned towards rustic serif and slab-serif fonts paired with clean, all-caps sans serifs and the occasional handwritten accent. With so many words needing to be incorporated, with the exception of one variation, we opted for leaving out a logomark icon in favor of a cleaner text look.

The brand design

We ended up choosing concept #1, which was most in line with the eco-friendly and forward-thinking yet natural / outdoorsy feel of the brand.

For the typography, we chose a classic, highly-legible and flexible pairing of Freight Text Pro and Freight Sans accented with handwritten, craftsman-style sans-serif Belgium for contrast. For select details on the website, we also included Queentown script.

We then create an iconic submark and secondary logo with more focus on the script. The graphic elements were inspired by natural textures and organic shapes, offering the possibility of endless combinations and color variations for a truly earthy vibe.

Finally, we designed and developed a custom website to showcase the mega real estate development, which will be added to and updated with time. The ultimate goal is to become the all-in-one hub for everything Newhall Ranch!
